(7 Nov 1998) French/Arabic Lebanese Prime Minister Rafek Hariri has met with French President Jacques Chirac in Paris. Hariri, who owns a home in Paris, was visiting on Saturday to open a Lebanese exhibition at the Institute of the Arab World in the French capital. President Chirac took the opportunity to discuss the recent Middle East peace agreement with the Lebanese leader. Lebanese Prime Minister Rafek Hariri has met with Jacques Chirac while on his visit to France. Hariri was in Paris to open an exhibition, but the two leaders took the opportunity to discuss developments in the Middle East peace process. The Lebanese leader also owns a home in Paris, where he spends part of the year. President Chirac expressed his optimism for the implementation of the Wye plantation agreement. SOUNDBITE: (French) "I wish for the success of this accord and this supposes that this is respected by the letter and every party respects the other and it goes towards the right direction." SUPERCAPTION: Jacques Chirac, French President Prime Minister Hariri also commented on the Israeli-Palestinian peace accord, but diplomatically said it is not his country's policy to interfere in the Palestinians' affairs. He did not weigh in strongly on the accord either way, but simply wished the Palestinians luck in the process. SOUNDBITE: (Arabic) "We do not intervene in the Palestinian affairs, we consider that isolated solutions do not lead to the calculated results but we say though that God helps the Palestinians" SUPERCAPTION: Raquif Hariri, Lebanese Prime Minister After meeting with Chirac, Hariri went on to the Institute of the Arab World. The exhibition which Hariri helped unveil there portrays Lebanon through a collection of historic and private photographers from 1900 to the 1960's. The display depicts a prosperous and cosmopolitan country which is trying to find an identity after years of French colonisation.
