Gardez has seen the most serious factional fighting in Afghanistan since the fall of the Taliban. About 60 people are reported to have been killed in a two-day battle last week. The fighting broke out after warlord Bacha Khan sought to take the governorship of Paktia province, in eastern Afghanistan near the border with Pakistan. Khan was appointed by the interim government of Prime Minister Hamid Karzai. But he is opposed by the shura - or council - members, who claim he is unscrupulous and bloodthirsty. According to fighters in Gardez, 300 men defended the town from Bacha Khan's soldiers trying to take it last week. To demonstrate the confused situation, Zaid Dullah Qaumi, who commands the fighters defending Gardez, said he still follows the government defence ministry in Kabul, but that he also doesn't want to interfere with Gardez's civilian leadership. The Gardez fighters told journalists on Friday the old fort, a key part of the town's defence, was hit a hundred times by shell fire, but still wasn't taken. At a lookout position on the fort, rocket launchers lay around, used by the defenders they said, to repel Bacha Khan's attack. Fighters on Friday were still on their guard, manning heavy-machine guns in case of another strike. The frontline lies between Gardez and distant mountains. It runs along the snow covered plains. Just visible looking out towards the frontline is a fortified structure, where Gardez fighters say US troops are based.
