Kaalam is the 4th track from Job Kurian's HOPE project, the 2nd last in the series. About Kaalam by Job himself " What we see, feel or experience in life can be real..sometimes illusions too....... 'Kaalam' is a note of gratitude to the Iron Lady of our family(Kalapurackal),who lived four generations back. She was my great grand father's sister 'Threasyamma' ( Theresa Joseph)-1890-1972.From my childhood days, I have been hearing tales from my father, about her heroic deeds and her contribution to our family and the society. With utmost love and respect , my father used to call her 'Kochelayamma' As I got to know more about her, I developed an immense sense of respect for this lady. She chose to remain a spinster and was well educated. She fought against the social setup and narrow minded attitude prevalent in the society those days. She was then, the Head Mistress of Cotton Hill School and a true planter, whose blood and sweat turned out to be the bread and butter of our family later on. She passed away at the age of Eighty Two. Her hardwork and commitment helped her acquire a considerable amount of agricultural land holdings, half of which she donated to several charitable institutions and the rest to her siblings which was again passed on to their children and grandchildren. Today as I stand on the threshold of the fourth generation, being a small beneficiary of her generosity, my strongest urge is to protect and nurture this inherited share and try my best to pass it on to the next generation. In this aspect I strongly relate to my father's sentiments and can ardently say that I am just a 'caretaker'of this piece of heaven. Recently, I created a small home,'my dream home'in this land, in the midst of serene nature and I invite you all to experience it in the coming days, through my new song 'Kaalam' from the HOPE series. Kaalam is a wild thought that came to my mind out of sheer gratitude and love for this great grandmother, whom I have not seen but have felt her grace throughout our lives.An imagination that 'Kochelayamma ' came to visit my dream home and was ecstatic to see her hard earned land being well cared for and nurtured. I bow my head and say a silent prayer of thanks, as she showers her blessings on all our generations and many more to come.
