NSW Shark Nets Explained

People think that shark nets are barriers that keep sharks away from swimmers. This is not the case. Shark nets designed in the 1930’s and deployed specifically to kill sharks, not keep them from entering the beaches. In NSW the nets are 150m long and 6m wide. They are set in deeper water so sharks can and do swim around or under them. 92% of animals caught in the nets are not targeted sharks. Frequently animals caught in the nets are then eaten by sharks so there is a strong argument that they are actually attracting predatory sharks closer to shore. There are better ways to manage the risks associated with the rare encounters we have with them. These include drone surveillance, personal shark deterrent devices, eco-barrier nets, shark-sensing buoys and a fake kelp forest that is actually a high tech shark barrier are all being trialled globally and have a much greater rate of effectiveness. Support replacing the mesh nets with modern, safer alternatives. www.change.org/savingnorman www.savingnorman.com.au
