But instead of 26 letters we have 7 notes: A B C D E F G HALF AND WHOLE TONES When we put index finger in 1st position of E, and move it 1 position up the neck, we've moved it a half tone or semi tone up the neck. So: Each fret we move up, is a half tone, or: a half tone = 1 fret When we put index finger in 1st position of E, and move it 2 positions up the neck, we've moved it a whole tone up the neck. So: Each 2 frets we move up is a whole tone Or: a whole tone= 2 frets FINDING THE NOTES ON THE A STRING Step 1: Find the A string Step 2: From A-B is a whole tone, so that means we have to go up 2 frets from A. Since A is an open string (Fret 0) we go to 0+2=2, so second f ret or second position. Step 3: From B-C is a half tone, so that means we go up 1 fret from B (fret 2). 2+1=3 so C is in position 3. Step 4: From C-D is a whole tone, so that means we go up?.... Step 5: From D-E is a ..... tone, so that means we go up ..... Step 6: From E-F Step 7: From F-G Step 8: From G-A
