Art Assignment created for ITALIC100 at Stanford University By Ryan Y Instructions: 1. Find a friend, virtually or IRL. 2. Ask the friend to describe or comment on a piece of artwork of any medium in 2 to 3 sentences. However, they cannot tell you what the title of the artwork is or who made it. Document your friend’s answer with written notes or videos. -The work can be of any medium, including painting, sculpture, film, play, installation, etc. The description and comment can range from literal description of an artwork (i.e., what does it represent? how big is it? what color is it? What’s going on in the work?), or the friend’s feeling and perception of the artwork. 3. Recreate your friend’s description/comment in any medium of your choice. (i.e.. Painting, photography, sculpture, poetry, dance…) 4. Create a “price tag” for your work, as if it were to be sold. 5. After completing your own work, ask the friend what the artwork they were referring to was. Compare your work with the original artwork, as well as their “prices”. If the work is a movie/TV show, the price of the work can be their box office income. If the work in a performance/dance, the price of the work can be their ticket price If you cannot determine the price of the work, make one up! What do you think? 6. Upload your work with the original work’s title and your price tag.
