Giving the Migrant Child a Voice | Dr Lynne Jones OBE | TEDxTruro

Lynne’s talk tells the story of what it’s like to leave your home and your country. The migrant crisis in Europe and Central America has been described and discussed from many angles in the world’s media, but one perspective has been missing; the voices of children themselves. Lynne’s talk describes her work to help migrant children communicate what they think and feel about their experiences, both past and present. What do they want to share with the wider world? What would they like us to understand? Lynne Jones is a child psychiatrist, relief worker and writer. She’s spent much of the last 25 years establishing and running mental health programmes in areas of conflict or natural disaster, including the Balkans, East and West Africa, South East Asia, the Middle East, Haiti and Central America. For the last four years, she’s been involved in the migrant crisis in Europe and Central America. In particular she’s developed a storytelling project, which allows children on the move to tell their stories directly in words and/or pictures. Lynne has an MA in Human Sciences from the University of Oxford and in 2001 she was made an Officer of the British Empire for her work in child psychiatry in conflict-affected areas of Central Europe. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
