One night, on Mahashivaratri, he entered the deep forest for hunting. Hungry and tired after not being able to catch any prey all day, he took shelter on a betel tree. Unknowingly, under the tree he was sitting on was an ancient Shivalinga. At night, when some deer came to drink water, Chitrabhanu aimed at him and tried to shoot him with his bow. But the deer pleaded with him to let him return to his family and say goodbye. Chitrabhanu's heart softened at his words and he let him go. Throughout the night, different deer begged for freedom, promising to return in the same way, and Chitrabhanu let them go each time. Each time, unbeknownst to him, betel leaves and water fell on the Shivalinga, which became equivalent to the fasting and worship of Mahashivaratri. In the morning, his heart became pure. By the grace of Lord Shiva, he is freed from all the sins of his previous birth and gives up hunting and takes up a righteous life.
