Stereotypes are specific beliefs we have about groups of people with certain traits. People engage in social categorization in which they sort each other into groups on the basis of gender, race, and other common attributes. This causes people to overestimate the differences between groups and underestimate the differences within groups. This, at times, can be effective because sometimes we need to form impressions quickly. However often times it is hurtful to those we are categorizing. This is because we have theories and assumptions about groups that are not part of our own groups. This refers to the outgroup homogeneity effect, which is the belief that there is greater similarity among members of the outgroup than there actually exists. Stereotypes distort perceptions of individuals because perceivers are likely to see members of stereotyped groups as more similar to the stereotype than they really are. When a target of a stereotype behaves in an ambiguous way, perceivers reduce the ambiguity by interpreting the behavior as consistent with the stereotype. ---------- Sociology tutoring on Chegg Tutors Learn about Sociology terms like Stereotypes on Chegg Tutors.
