The materials required for growth and maintenance of our body are called nutrients. Food is the basic source of nutrients. The nutritious things which we eat for obtaining the nutrients is called food. E.g. Fruits, vegetables, cereals, eggs, meat, fish and dairy products. The materials used to prepare a dish are called ingredients. E.g. Sambar. The main ingredients of this dish are Tamarind broth, Lentils and Vegetables. Primarily, the food ingredients are obtained from plants and animals. From plants we obtain grains, fruits, vegetables, cereals etc. We call it as agriculture. The plants grown in agricultural area are called crop. The crop used to obtain food is called food crop. Animals are also sources of food. We obtain milk, meat, eggs, chicken, fish, etc from animals. Often, we produce different food items from a single kind of food. E.g. Milk is used to prepare dairy products like butter, cream, cheese and curd. We use different parts of the plants as food. E.g. we use roots of plants, leaves of plants, flowers of some plants, fruits, seeds etc. We obtain food from animals also in the form of milk, eggs, meat, seafood, honey etc. All living organisms need food. Mainly they are classified into different categories like herbivores, carnivores and omnivores. Herbivores: herb means plant and vores means eaters. The animals which obtain their food only from plants are called herbivores e.g. goat, cow, horse, deer, giraffe, butterfly, etc. The process of chewing the food by bringing it into mouth from the stomach is called rumination. Carnivores: Carne means meat vores means eater. The animals which obtain their food only from other animals i.e. in the form of meat are called carnivores. E.g. Lion, tiger, jackal, fox, eagle, snake, spider, Shark etc. Omnivores: omni means all vores means eaters. The animals which obtain their food from plants as well as other animals are called omnivores. E.g. Human, Bear, raccoon, crow, chicken, lizards, rats etc. Beside these three main categories there are other animals such as parasites, scavengers and decomposers. Parasites are the animals which live on or in the other animals body and obtain nutrients from their body. E.g. tapeworms, fleas, barnacles, bacteria, virus, protozoa such as plasmodium etc. Scavengers are the animals such as vulture which feed on dead animals or plants. Decomposers are the animals such as bacteria which decomposes or breaks down complex organic materials such as dead parts of animals and plants, waste materials etc into simple inorganic substances such as iron, nitrogen. These materials goes into soil and becomes available for plants as nutrients. To access complete course and more videos, visit: https://www.Learnfatafat.com
