Adult Animation’s Art Style Problem

SUBSCRIBE:    / @roundtablevids   TOONDRIP: https://www.toondrip.clothing/ As far back as I can remember, adult animation has always had a reputation for looking butt ugly. Sure there are some exceptions, I honestly wouldn’t consider staples like The Simpsons, Family Guy or South Park “ugly” by any means, but it’s hard to deny that a fair share of adult cartoons from the 2010s onwards, are a bit of an eyesore. It’s like a lot of them chase the look of these shows but settle on looking worse, while still trying to give off the vibe of the thing they’re inspired by. For the longest time I didn’t think much of this, but lately, I’m starting to get a little concerned! The biggest critique with adult animation is that most of them are sitcoms. Low stakes comedy that, while entertaining, didn’t make for prestige television. Yet we have shows like Common Side Effects, Carol & the End of the World and Fired on Mars, shows that push the medium forward...and yet it feels like no one is talking about them. And the common barrier that people seem to be running into are the art styles. So today, I wanna answer the question: are ugly art styles RUINING adult animation? And does the success of shows like Invincible, Hazbin Hotel and Pretty Please I Don't Wanna Be A Magical Girl prove that adult animation might be pivoting to nostalgic and "kid" art styles?
