The earliest healthcare institution in Singapore for the mentally ill was the 30-bed Insane Hospital, built in 1841. In 1928, the Mental Hospital was built in Yio Chu Kang. Fast forward years later, the current 2000-bed hospital was renamed the Institute of Mental Health in 1993 to reflect the changes in the model of psychiatric care – from custodial to community care – and shifting perceptions of mental illness in society. Rooted in the belief that recovery is possible, psychiatric care today is a collaborative effort with patients and caregivers. With improved mental health literacy, more are able to take charge of their mental health. Besides providing clinical and rehabilitative services in the hospital and community, mental health research is a key pillar in the institution. As a teaching hospital, IMH also leads the training of the next generation of mental health professionals in Singapore. In 2021, IMH rolled out the Smart Hospital initiative with three key pillars – Digital Hospital, Innovative Hospital and Green Hospital – to transform care through technology and make the hospital an environmentally-friendly campus. In order to better serve our community, patients and staff, IMH has developed three Master Plans that will guide our long-term strategic planning. These are the Clinical Master Plan, Campus Master Plan and Human Capital Master Plan that would form the core strategy for IMH for the next 10 years (“Beyond 100”).
