TV6, an independent channel, went off-air following a controversial Bankruptcy case in January. Journalists from the station maintain that the Russian government masterminded the downfall of TV6 as a response to their critical reporting. A group of the station's journalists currently broadcast news bulletins and other television programs over the radio, using time allocated to them by 'Echo of Moscow'. The group, backed by supporting companies, are currently vying for use of the old TV6 broadcasting frequency, which has become known as "Button 6". On Wednesday the Russian Ministry of Information will decide who will gain control of frequency. Analysts believe the government, in particular the presidential administration, want to establish full control over the media in the two year run up to the next presidential election.
