(7 Aug 2016) Iran confirmed on Sunday the execution of a nuclear scientist who gave the U.S. intelligence about the country's contested nuclear program. Spokesman for the Iranian judiciary, Gholamhosein Mohseni Ejehi, confirmed the death of Shahram Amiri to the country's official IRNA news agency. He did not provide details of the execution, but said the initial death sentence had been reviewed by an appeal court and Amiri had access to a lawyer. U.S. officials in 2010 said they paid Amiri some $5 million (£3.8 million) to defect and provide "significant" information about Iran's atomic program. However, Amiri later fled the U.S. without the money. Iranian officials previously touted Amiri's claim he had been abducted by U.S. agents while on a pilgrimage to holy sites in Saudi Arabia, welcoming him home in 2010 as a hero.
