Rovers signed Charlie Mulgrew on a free transfer in August 2016, after the Scottish international's contract expired at Celtic. Charlie would make 28 appearances in his first season as a Blackburn Rovers player, scoring 3 goals. However, the season was to end in major disappointment as Rovers were relegated to League One. The following season saw Mulgrew take on the captain's arm band and his experience and quality proved vital in helping Rovers to win instant promotion back to the Championship. Charlie played a crucial role in Rovers' climb out of League One, alongside Bradley Dack and Danny Graham. The trio firing the goals required to get out of League One. Mulgrew's 14 goals in the 2017/18 Season will always be appreciated. Fittingly, it was Captain Mulgrew who scored the important winning goal away at Doncaster Rovers, a win which sealed Rovers' promotion back to the Championship. He would go on to score another 10 League goals in the 2018/19 Season as Rovers consolidated in their first season back in the Championship.
