Minsk is the capital of the Republic of Belarus and is located on both banks of the Svisloch River. During the Great Patriotic War, when Belarus was part of the Soviet Union, Minsk found itself in the direction of the main attack of the German Nazi army, towards Moscow. By June 26, 1941, on the outskirts of Minsk, fierce battles began with the advance units of the enemy's tank groups that had broken through to the city. On June 28, 1941 the Nazis seized the city. During the three-year occupation, the population of Minsk led an underground struggle against the Germans. Despite the terror, city and district party committees operated in the city, underground newspapers appeared and more than 9 thousand people were active in underground and partisan detachments. On July 3, 1944 Minsk was liberated by Soviet troops of the Belarusian Front. Minsk was awarded the honorary title of Hero City in 1974, for the "courage and struggle against the invaders".....
