Theotoke Parthene, Greek Orthodox (Byzantine) hymn arranged for cello and pedal-note accompaniment Vassilis Saitis, cello Thessaloniki State Symphony Orchestra (cello and double-bass sections) The hymn was played as an encore piece, after the performance of Confessional for cello and orchestra, by Christos Hatzis, on Holy Wednesday 2023 (12/4/2023) in the Thessaloniki Concert Hall. The text of Theotoke Parthene is similar to the first part of the prayer Ave Maria of the Latin Catholic Church, with the addition of a very brief opening phrase and a short concluding phrase. Here is an English translation of the Greek text: God-bearing Virgin, hail, Mary full of grace, The Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, for thou hast given birth to the Saviour of our souls. Even though the hymn's text is a prayer of praise for Theotokos (Mother of God), the Byzantine melody is deeply sorrowful. It could be that the unknown hymnwriter wished to express his compassion to a mother that had prematurely lost her child... Το κείμενο του ύμνου είναι η γνωστή προσευχή προς την Παναγία Θεοτόκο: Θεοτόκε Παρθένε, χαῖρε, κεχαριτωμένη Μαρία, ὁ Κύριος μετὰ σοῦ, εὐλογημένη σὺ ἐν γυναιξί, καὶ εὐλογημένος ὁ καρπὸς τῆς κοιλίας σου, ὅτι Σωτῆρα ἔτεκες τῶν ψυχῶν ἡμῶν. Παρότι τα λόγια της προσευχής είναι δοξαστικά και αποτίουν φόρο τιμής στην Παναγία, η μελωδία εκφράζει σε πολλά σημεία βαθύ πόνο, ίσως γιατί ο υμνογράφος θέλει να δείξει τη συμπόνια του για μια μάνα που έχασε πρόωρα το παιδί της...
