MMA icon Conor McGregor has announced he’s running for president of Ireland just days after visiting US President Donald Trump at the White House. In an Instagram post on Friday, McGregor said he wants elections by November 11 and talked about immigration and his opposition to the EU migration deal. He said he would be the only candidate to stand up to the government, adding, “I will!”. While in Washington, D.C. for St. Patrick’s Day, McGregor criticised the government and claimed there’s an “illegal immigration problem” in Ireland. “The illegal immigration racket is running ravage on the country, there are rural towns in Ireland that have been overrun in one swoop," he told reporters at the White House. “Issues need to be addressed and the 40 million Irish-Americans as I have said need to hear this because if not, there will be no place to come home and visit. “Ireland is at the cusp of potentially losing its Irishness and I’m here to raise the issue and highlight it." In his presidential pitch, the 36-year-old suggested that Ireland’s people vote on the EU migration deal in a referendum, calling it real democracy. “This is the future of Ireland with me as President,” McGregor wrote. “All citizens of Ireland to have a voice and a choice on their future!”
