Ep 2: Resilience on Screen and in Life: Sean Kanan's Story of Overcoming

In today's episode, Eve Richards, the host of The Discovery Pod With Eve, and Melissa Niece Smith, the cohost for this episode, are joined by Sean Kanan, an American actor, producer, prolific author, chef, and motivational speaker who played the role of Mike Barnes in the film Karate Kid. Kanan began his karate training as a young man under Shotokan master William Stoner. By the time he landed the role, he had a good grounding in Japanese Karate, which was crucial for embodying the central antagonist of Ralph Macchio’s Daniel LaRusso. He trained in Shitō-ryu at the school run by Fumio Demuro, Karate master, and with stunt coordinator Tang Soo Master Pat E. Johnson. The following year, he joined the Fox television series The Outsiders, executive produced by Francis Ford Coppola. In 1993, Kanan joined the ABC soap opera General Hospital as A.J. Quartermaine, the troubled son of Dr. Alan and Dr. Monica Quartermaine. Soap Opera Digest nominated Kanan for an award in the Outstanding Newcomer category for his incredible portrayal of the fictional character whose storylines often centered on his ongoing battle with alcoholism. He was sober for four years. He stopped drinking in 2020, and his life improved. He has published four books. He lives in Rome, speaks Italian, was married in Italy, and honeymooned in Sicily. In 2011, he published The Modern Gentleman: Cooking and entertaining with Sean Kanan. In this book, he shared many of his favorite recipes and used them to help “rebrand men” by providing tips on etiquette and manners and entertaining for special occasions. This book aims to motivate people to be their best selves, reconnect with their true selves, and use food to build relationships. In this episode, Sean shares some powerful insights on when he started acting, his younger life as a bullied kid, how he overcame 2020 challenges, if he would like to do a Netflix special, what he is doing differently as a producer, his experience after reprising the role Mike Barned in Cobra Kai and why he went back to the production of the Karate Kid. Kanan also sheds more light on the scenes he did after his surgery, his advice to actors in the film industry, who inspired him to be an actor, how new people in the industry can get mentors, if his journey is worth it, and three people he would have dinner with.
