When you talk about fruits and diabetes, there is always a lot of misconception about fruits in diabetes. Some people say that fruits are absolutely safe and some people say that they are not safe at all. The most important question you need to understand is that how much of fruit you are going to have at a given time. So if you are going to have 80 gram of fruit. One serving of fruit is considered as 80 grams. Of course the quantity varies depending upon the concentration of sugar that is present in the fruit but approximately all fruits are safe if they are consumed in less than 80 grams. In how much is 80 grams of fruit? If you take a small banana, that is about 110 grams. , a single banana. So you have to have a little less of that banana or a small, that will be one serving. like hat a person is allowed to have 3 servings of fruit as part of healthy diet. This applies to both people without diabetes and for people with diabetes. But in diabetes we have certain things that go along with the recommendation of fruit. One is that you want patients to take processed fruit or fruit juices. So these tend to be with a high glycemic load. for instance a glass of orange juice would contain glucose hat is present in 3 or 4 oranges. That is a very large portion you are taking at one point. We do recommend fruit take for patients with diabetes. But typically 80 grams is less and it should be between meals. There is no fruit that is forbidden in diabetes. You can use all fruits in diabetes and typically you have the fruit between the meals as a healthy snack because fruits also contains vitamin and fiber which is very essential for the body.
