Stress, Mental Health Struggles and Emotional Instability, are human problems that can happen to anyone who is exposed to triggering factors, lifestyles and environments. As long as we are human beings, we are prone to these kinds of struggles, and so it is about time we stopped stigmatizing people who have these challenges, just because they are 'Africans'. I have come to understand that this 'Africans are strong' narrative is not entirely true. Yes, we may have certain dispositions and perspectives that make us more resilient than people from other races. But this does not excuse us from being HUMAN. So maybe we think we are so strong because we have refused to be vulnerable; talk about our weaknesses, and find ways to live a more balanced life. Maybe we think we are so strong because we have been socialized to think it is taboo to feel unwell in our minds and souls. Not until one's sickness is seen on the outside with obvious physical symptoms, no one tends to take them seriously. Most times, the victim is simply tagged as being weak and or lazy...and unfortunately, by the time these 'silent' ailments begin to manifest physically, it is mostly too late.
