Synology DS1525+ & DS1825+ NAS Showcased at Computex 2025: USB-C DX525 Expansion, 2.5GbE

Synology’s product manager Cody walks through the 2025 refresh of the Plus-series DiskStations at Computex, centering on the 5-bay DS1525 Plus and 8-bay DS1825 Plus. Both units now ship with dual 2.5 GbE ports, USB-C expansion, and support for the new DX525 five-bay add-on, bringing maximum capacities to 15 and 18 drives respectively. Replacing legacy eSATA, the dual-USB-C 6 Gbps link offers stronger latching, higher throughput, and future-proof cabling, yet remains strictly for storage—expansion bays appear as native volumes, with no compute off-loading. Synology keeps the bus isolated to maintain RAID integrity and predictable latency across daisy-chained DX525 units, mirroring internal drives for parity-level parity. Model designators stay consistent: “DS” for DiskStation tower, “RS” for rackmount, while the numeric prefix still denotes total potential bays. DS1525 Plus reaches 15 drives via two DX525s; DS1825 Plus scales to 18 in the same way. Smaller siblings DS425 Plus and DS925 Plus follow the scheme, though only the nine-bay unit offers expansion. Hardware updates lean on an AMD Ryzen V1500B quad-core CPU paired with 8 GB ECC DDR4 (user-upgradable) and twin M.2 NVMe slots for cache or storage pools. The DS1825 Plus retains a full PCIe 3.0 ×4 slot for 10/25/50 GbE or GPU acceleration cards, whereas the DS1525 Plus integrates Synology’s mini-NIC slot for a compact 10 GbE upgrade. The DX525 itself is a 5-bay refresh of the long-running DX517, adopting USB-C instead of SATA for host link and adding screw-locking connectors. Two units can hang off one NAS, each powered and managed through DSM as independent volumes to avoid performance contention within the primary RAID group. Drive qualification tightens in 2025: the launch-day compatibility list for DS925 Plus and newer models features only Synology-branded HDDs and SSDs. A new public testing program will allow third-party drives, but full warranty and firmware orchestration remain exclusive to in-house disks, ensuring uniform vibration, power, and thermal profiles across expanding arrays. Beyond prosumer gear, Synology previewed the PASS 7700 active-active U.3 NVMe all-flash array with tiering and synchronous replication for enterprise workloads. In surveillance, the forthcoming DVA 7400 NVR promises 40 simultaneous AI analytics streams, semantic video search, and PoE switch management—complementing existing BC500 cameras and C2 cloud video archives. Long-term software coverage stays unchanged: DSM receives functional and security updates for as long as chipsets support them. Cody cites his six-year-old DS218 Plus still running current builds; when hardware ages out, Synology advises isolating the unit behind VPN or repurposing it as a backup target while Hyper Backup and C2 Storage provide encrypted off-site replicas.
