Mechwar Bel Wadi: Exploring Anfeh's Sacred Sites Churches, Monasteries, & Balamand's Monastery

Mechwar Bel Wadi: Exploring Anfeh's Sacred Sites Churches, Monasteries, & Balamand's Monastery . مشوار بالوادي: استكشاف الكنائس والأديرة في أنفه ودير البلمن . Our Lady of the Wind, Saydet El-Rih in Arabic, was built in the Byzantine era in Enfeh, Lebanon. Even though the roof of the chapel has long collapsed, it still retains traces of wall paintings representing Saint George and Saint Demetrios, the Omnipotent Christ, two evangelists, some saints, and the Virgin calming the wind. It is believed that sailors and fishermen from the village of Enfeh built the chapel so that the Virgin Mary would protect them as they sailed the Mediterranean. . The Church of Saint Catherine is Lebanon's only remaining Romanesque church dating from the time of the Crusades. The church is partially restored and still used by the Greek Orthodox community. In the old quarters of this same area is a church with a double altar, dedicated to Saint Simon’s part of the church and is interesting for its ceiling that incorporates jars in its masonry to absorb echoes and improve acoustics. . The Church of Saint Simeon Stylites is one of the oldest surviving church complexes, founded in the 5th century. It is located approximately 30 kilometers (19 mi) northwestern of Aleppo, Syria. It was constructed on the site of the pillar of Saint Simeon Stylites, a renowned stylite monk. The church is popularly known as either Qalaat Semaan or Deir Semaan. . The Balamand Monastery (historically called Belmont, Bellimontis ultra Mare, or Bellus-Mons), is a monastery for the Greek Orthodox Church of Antioch founded in 1157 in Balamand (Belmont), the Crusader County of Tripoli, now in the Koura District, in Northern Lebanon. It was originally started by Cistercian monks and maintained as such until the Mamluk conquest in 1289, then re-established as a monastery by Greek Orthodox monks in 1610, after a poorly documented period of three centuries. On the grounds that the monastery has been established the University of Balamand, was founded by the Orthodox Patriarch Ignatius IV of Antioch in 1988, though the university claims to be secular and a distinct institution. .
