pFsense homelab build 2024 [LGA1700]

🔥 Cool Stuff on Amazon: https://amzn.to/3B6Gqru 🔥 Today we’re taking a look at upgrading my sort of ancient pFsense build. This was kind of a quick build because my pFsense firewall just started crashing seemingly randomly about once a day. That’s very bad when you and your significant other both work from home. Turns out after many years of solid performance, my integrated Intel Atom J3455M developed a memory issue. I did actually re-use some items though, the Rosewill 2U case, my old Seasonic 550watt PSU and I grabbed an old Samsung 840 evo with the lowest amount of hours, I have a ton of SATA SSDs. As for the new stuff, I went for an Asrock B660M Pro RS motherboard, an Intel G7400, and the cheapest stick of Crucial 8gb DDR4-3200 that I could find. This system is low spec’d for a gaming PC for sure but for a pfsense firewall router type build, this is actually plenty of power. The B660M Pro RS is a decent motherboard, I’ve used these before in other builds, I could have saved some money here on a lower end board but since I have experience with this board and if I did ever want to re-use this in some other type of build, this would be a solid motherboard choice. The G7400 I got a deal on a while ago, it’s been sitting around. Two cores with hyperthreading at 3.7GHz is plenty for a firewall like this. As for the memory, I definitely didn’t need 8gb but I just didn’t want to buy a 4gb dimm and it was cheap so, 8gb 3200 is what I grabbed. Ah, I forgot to mention that I did re-use my 4 port Intel NIC, I run my ethernet connection from my ISP into this card as well as the connection to my main switch and to a firewalled off network that I use for connecting devices that I don’t generally trust or know if I trust yet. My Internet connection right now is 300/300 but I have no doubt that this setup could easily handle 2gbps home internet. I have a relatively light pfsense setup but packages don't typically require tons of cpu or memory for firewalls. The power consumption of the old setup was usually around 11 watts if I remember correctly, this new setup is averaging about xx watts. I’ve had this setup running for a little while now and I’m very happy with it. If you’re thinking of building your own pfsense router and you are still using something like your ISP router, I would definitely consider giving it a try. Pfsense is free software, super stable, and very well documented. You can check out channels like Lawrence Systems for a ton of pfsense guides and information, I’ve learned a lot from him. If any of you have any questions or want to share what you’re running for your home or homelab setup, I’d definitely be interested to know, discuss in the comments. Until next time, keep your systems up and running!
