BattleTech Longplay (Sega Genesis) [QHD]

Game Info --------------------------------------------------- Developer: Malibu Interactive Publisher: Extreme Entertainment Year of Release: 1994 Game Review & Impressions --------------------------------------------------- My own introduction to the world of FASA Corporation's BattleTech game system and extended universe was with MechWarrior 2, released on PC in 1995. However, earlier video game adaptations based on the franchise exist, one of which is the subject of this particular video. BattleTech (AKA MechWarrior 3050) is an isometric action game heavily inspired by EA's Desert Strike and subsequent sequels, albeit featuring the iconic bipedal mechanised war machines, rather than helicopters. Right off the bat, the similarities with the Strike series are, well, striking! Each of the game's 5 campaigns features a series of missions to complete, distributed across a completely open map. The order in which you tackle the objectives is, for the most part, entirely up to you, although there are some exceptions in later levels. Before each mission commences, you get to load up your Timber Wolf with 3 different weapon systems, one from each power category. You'll then spend the next 30 minutes stomping around an isometric map blowing up buildings, squishing infantry under foot, and taking down rival mechs whenever they cross your path. Coolant must be collected to keep your mech in optimum condition, while ammo supplies -- always incredibly scarce -- must be secured to keep you in the fight. This all should, in theory, be an action-packed experience. Stomping around in a mech the size of a small high-rise and packing enough firepower to level a small city should have made for the kind of power fantasy any gamer in their right mind would have wanted to indulge in. Unfortunately, this all comes crashing down the moment you pick up the controller and try to pilot your mech around for the first time. Any prospect of a good time is dashed pretty quickly as you come to realise that that the controls are, in a word, horrid. The principal issue is the legs and torso of the mech rotate and move independently of one another, but the Genesis joypad offers no way to maintain any sort of cohesive control over these two elements. Changing the direction of travel causes the cockpit to rotate to face the same direction automatically, but the fact it's not instant means bringing your guns to bear on targets is an incredibly finicky process. Strafing -- a process of walking in one direction whilst shooting in another -- can be achieved by holding down the fire button to lock in your direction of travel, using the D-Pad to rotate, but this, as with the rest of the controls, really need a controller with dual analogue sticks to make it work. And I suppose the developers already knew this, because they made a feature out of the shortcomings via a two-player mode: one player controls the legs of the mech while the other has control over the torso, cockpit and guns. It's an interesting concept which, on paper at least, alleviates the issues inherent in trying to have a single player control both aspects with a single D-Pad. Sadly, solo players have little option but to persevere with It's a shame that solo players have no option but to struggle with controls which spoil what is, in other respects, a cool concept for a game. I really, REALLY wanted to like this, but the controls, coupled with a difficulty level which is quite punishing to begin with resulted in an experience which just felt too frustrating to enjoy to its fullest extent.
