The US is planning to beef up its air defences on the highly strategic island of Guam as part of a massive defensive upgrade plan. The proposed plan will include building 20 new air defence sites packed with surface-to-air interceptors and radars in Guam. Once the defence sites are built, the island will have one of the most impregnable airspaces in the world. The elements in the 20 new air defence sites will be a part of the planned Enhanced Integrated Air and Missile Defence (EIAMD) system. Under the proposed plan, the US is set to pack the Guam bases with defence systems ranging from THAAD to Patriot. News of the US plan comes as North Korea tested its most powerful ICBM, capable of reaching the east coast of the US. The island of Guam is strategically located in the western Pacific and is home to major US Air Force, Navy, and now Marine Corps bases.
