Complete -Barbed - 01 Return to Hoogie Boogie Land

From Complete's 2003 " Barbed" album, here is "Return to Hoogie Boogie Land " a.k.a.,"Hoogie Boogie Land 2" or simply "Hoogie Boogie Land ". ( "Barbed" was Complete's first, official studio release after a series of music videos and demos. This album consisted of both original band members Curt Low ( Vocals / Lead Guitar) and Pete "Sparky/Creecher" Creech (Bass / Backup Vocals) . On drums was John Meek. It was recorded by Bart Rose. "Barbed" was originally released via CD-R with under 500 copies. During the early 2000s Complete had actually renamed themselves to Barbed and went into another hiatus shortly after. After all, Complete had not yet been exposed to the world and had not gained the notoriety that they have to this very day. In 2006-2007, they wisely went back to their original name, Complete. To avoid any sort of confusion, every remaining "Barbed" CD-R simply had the name " Complete" written over it in red marker and some were signed by both Pete Creech as "Creecher" and Curt Low. Curt once spoke of losing many of these copies while on tour in Germany with a band called "Green Day". Fortunately, one copy was preserved by Terranodon Founder ( and Complete super fan), Orlando Logan Olivero. "Barbed" was the band's attempt to create something a bit more organized and cohesive. While it does mildly detract from their "original" sound, there are still subtle hints of the signature, Complete chaos. Within each piece lie nuggets of enjoyment that any true Complete fan can appreciate. Lyrical content and vocal delivery are still stay true to Complete's identity. Within each piece lie nuggets of enjoyment that any true Complete fan can appreciate. Take, for instance, the song " I don't give a Damn" where the lyrics describe a situation where the protagonist and his friends had been made fun of and because of that, the protagonist feels like taking a shovel and hitting a person on the head and "leaving their ass ready for dead"; however, the song's protagonist realizes that such violent acts are not necessary and "they don't give a damn" what they say so that any detractors could " kiss their ass and go away" - a turn the other cheek sentiment. One thing to remind the listener is that that this was written and released before their global exposure. Another interesting example of the album's uniqueness are the songs " Roll-On" and "Yesterday". In the song, "Roll-On" the first word in the lyrics is "Yesterday", then the next song is entitled "Yesterday" with choruses that repeat the word " yesterday". When asked about this once, Curt Low expressed that it was intentional and stated that "Roll-on is the yesterday to the song yesterday". Another interesting thing to take note of, is the vocal delivery within measures. Curt Low, at times, has the tendency to insert rapid, short, syllabic patterns within a measure while allowing the next measure to breath. He instinctually applies a number of techniques such as consonance, spoken word, onomatopoeia, and a generous amount of soulful, primal whaling. Some of which approach the listener playfully predictable manner, and others without warning. Something that a listener may also notice of is Curt's tendency to avoid rhymes in areas that any songwriter would be tempted to do so. Low has proved that he is fully capable of doing this but for some reason pulls away and opts for seemingly randomized wording at the end of a line which would, more than likely, subvert the expectations of a first-time listener. Other times, he develops a rhyme using the same, exact word. Let's take, "Return to Hoogie Boogie Land" where he rhymes the word " see" three times. "Barbed" ,by many hardcore fans, is seen as Complete's "White Album" as it introduced a new layer of depth that most people thought Complete were simply not capable of doing. "Barbed" does not present the tumultuous polyphony that fans are familiar with; however, the chaos is hidden within the framework like a tiger in tall grass. Today, songs from "Barbed" album remain in the band's setlist. Curt Low still insists that he must "Show the world what Complete is all about...". "Barbed" is scheduled to be re-released officially on physical media in 2021 by Terranodon Media. Until then, this album is being released online for listeners that are unfamiliar with their works outside of the first 5.
