BMWs have always promised a sporting driving experience. Engines range from 4 cylinders in the 118i to six in the 335i - to eight and even a mighty twelve cylinders in the 7-series. But now there's change happening under the hood. BMW plans to bring a totally new engine to market. The new engine is basically half of an inline six cylinder motor - as if it were cut through at the middle. The resulting three cylinder powerplant has the genes of BMW's legendary six. This includes its smoothness, with minimum vibration. A balance shaft works with the camshaft to eliminate the roughness typical of small engines. The balance shaft is located deep in the engine housing to save space. The new engines feature 3 cylinders that each displace 500 cc's. Power ranges from 90 to 150 kilowatts for the gas models and between 60 and 135 kilowatts for the diesels. But they're not just powerful - the new engines also SOUND strong and dynamic. You'd never guess there are just three cylinders working under there. The new small engines are proof that size isn't everything. Sporting driving is also possible with just three cylinders - with less weight, lower consumption and fewer CO2 emissions. That should help improve efficiency across the company's entire range.
