Sukhothai Historical Park (Central Park Area), Thailand 00:00 Sukhothai Sukhothai was the capital of the first Thai kingdom, usually called the Sukhothai Kingdom, hence the modern city is often called New Sukhothai. 00:23 Sukhothai National Park Sukhothai Historical Park covers the ruins of Sukhothai, literally 'dawn of happiness', capital of the Sukhothai Kingdom in the 13th and 14th centuries, in north central Thailand. It is near the city of Sukhothai, capital of Sukhothai Province. The city's walls form a rectangle about 2 km east-west by 1.6 km north-south. There are 193 ruins on 70 km2 of land. There is a gate in the centre of each wall. Inside are the remains of the royal palace and twenty-six temples, the largest being Wat Mahathat. 00:52 Wat Mahathat This temple was considered the most important royal temple in the Sukhothai Kingdom and can be found in the very middle of the central zone surrounded by a moat and brick wall. Wat Mahathat is one of, if not the most impressive Sukhothai temple and is guaranteed to take your breath away. It is certainly fitting of its name ‘Mahathat’ which means ‘great relic’. 05:48 Wat Si Sawai Transport yourself even further back in time at the Wat Si Sawai temple, which was built around the late 12th century or early 13th century when Sukhothai was still part of the Khmer Empire, now recognized as Cambodia. Its Cambodian influence is evident from the Khmer-style design of the prangs, which have been beautifully preserved and notably differ in design from some of the other temples in Sukhothai Historical Park. 07:27 Wat Traphang Ngoen Situated to the west of Wat Mahathat is Wat Traphang-Ngoen with its square pedestal, main sanctuary, and stucco standing Buddha image in four niches. There is a viharn in front, and in the east of the pond, there is an Island with an ubosot. This edifice has already crumbled and only its pedestal and laterite columns still remain. Many monuments and magnificent scenery are visible from this location. 08:19 Wat Traphang Ngoen Phra Ubosot Separated from the temple proper, and located in the middle of the pond, is the temple's ordination hall, or ubosot, nowadays only the base is still remaining. There is also an empty pedestal from there was once a seated Buddha statue. A modern bridge connects the island to the bank. 08:49 Wat Sa Si The Sukhothai temple of Wat Sa Si is beautifully located on a small island in the midst of the Traphang-Takuan pond northwest of Wat Mahathat.
