Quantum Mechanics - Theory of Scattering : Optical Theorem and Phase Shift - Partial Wave Analysis

In this video you will find a brief account of two most important things,namely Optical Theorem and Phase Shift. The total scattering cross section can be correlated to the forward scattering amplitude. Actually the scattering amplitude is a complex quantity. It’s found that the total scattering cross section is proportional to the imaginary part of the forward scattering amplitude. This fact is known as the Optical Theorem. In Born approximation the optical theorem is violated because the scattering amplitude is real in this approximation. Another aspect of the video is the concept of phase shift. The result using which phase shift can be found,has been obtained. It’s found that for the attractive potential the phase shift is positive while for the repulsive potential it’s negative.
