The focus on fun and exploration in the water is key for kids to feel comfortable and confident. Sometimes less structured, playful moments in the water can teach children a lot about swimming techniques like floating, holding their breath, and gaining confidence. Using a jacuzzi or smaller pool to practice is a fantastic idea for younger kids. Plus, encouraging them to mimic each other, setting little challenges, and making it a fun experience show how important it is for kids to feel engaged and relaxed while learning. I have been a swimming teacher for 20 years and am so passionate about helping others teach their children these important skills. Learning to swim is one of the most important skills your child will ever learn so why not have a go at teaching them yourself. Here are some tips for parents who might feel hesitant about teaching their kids to swim without professional lessons. 1. Teaching your child to swim should involve plenty of play and a little bit of learning. Start with a game where you get them to mimic your actions such as teaching them hold to hold their breath. 2. If your child doesn’t want to listen to your instructions, then try a different activity. 3. Keep your teaching points short like you see on these videos 4. Always give praise even for the smallest achievement 5. Focus on safety in the water encouraging them to get to the side of the swimming pool 6.
