Plumas County is a railroad enthusiast's dream. Two class one railroads and one historic short line, plus the natural beauty of the Sierras and the Feather River...what more could one ask for? Several attractions on Union Pacific's Canyon Subdivision (WP's famed "Feather River Route") and BNSF's Gateway Subdivision (The "High Line") are featured, plus two bonus attractions...though not technically in Plumas County. This particular project is the fourth edition in a series that originally included seven attractions highlighted in this article https://www.abc10.com/article/enterta... My thoughts on this article have expanded to include just a few others. Check out my previous editions on my channel. 0:09 - The Chilcoot Tunnel: Straddling the border between Plumas and Lassen County, the Chilcoot Tunnel's east portal opens to the high desert and the the west opens to the Sierra Valley. 1:38 - Union Pacific's Portola Yard and Western Pacific Railroad Museum. Nestled in the heart of Portola is a small Union Pacific rail yard. Certainly not as busy as it's neighbor in Sparks, NV, this rail yard shuffles a few cars on and off the mainline trains as well as the local. 5:30 - Clio Trestle. Towering more than 170 feet in the air, this imposing structure helps trains travel the rugged terrain of the High Sierra. 6:28 - The Spring Garden Tunnel. Just under 1 1/2 miles in length, the Spring Garden Tunnel is the longest Plumas County tunnel on the Feather River Route. The east portal opens just to the west of Sloat, CA and the west hidden among the trees in Spring Garden. 7:32 - The Williams Loop. There are only two places in the United States where a train crosses under itself... one is a relatively obscure one in Southern California (sarcasm)...and the other is the Williams Loop. The Loop is a rail spiral that is approximately one mile in length. Trains exceeding this length will cross under (or over themselves) while the railroad maintains its 1% grade. 12:22 - The Chandler Road Trestle. New in this edition is The Chandler Road Trestle. Similar in structure to the Clio Trestle, it is nestled among the trees and cottages north east of Quincy, CA. 14:40 - The Quincy Railroad. The QRR is an historic short line that now serves the Sierra Pacific Lumber Mill in Quincy, CA. It exchanges loads and empties with the Union Pacific at Quincy Junction. 19:40 - Switching at Quincy Junction. One feature of this railroad is the grade to Quincy Junction. The steep hill and limitations of rail length mean the QRR's EMDs can only pull three or four cars at a time. 25:07 - The Keddie Wye. Probably the most famous attraction on the Feather River Route is the Keddie Wye...the only railroad junction built on a bridge in the United States. The Wye junctions with the modern-day BNSF Gateway Subdivision. 27:05 - The Spanish Creek Trestle. High over the Spanish Creek sits the Spanish Creek Trestle. It is the southern most bridge among several on the Inside Gateway subdivision. 30:07 - The Indian Creek Bridge. Along the ridge of the Inside Gateway is the Indian Creek Bridge. Here trains traverse the rugged terrain of the Sierra Nevada just south of Crescent Mills, CA. 32:36 - The Hollenbeck Loop. The Hollenbeck Loop is a horseshoe style curve located near Lake Almanor. I could not find much information on this attraction, but nonetheless, the grade is steep and the trains are loud as they climb or descend to and from Lake Almanor siding. The bridge over CA-89 still bears the inscription of the venerable "Western Pacific" railroad. 36:07 - The Honeymoon Tunnels. The Tunnels located just outside of Belden, CA are a series of 5 short tunnels through which trains travel along the banks of the Feather River. 37:00 - The Tobin Bridges. The Tobin Bridges is one of two examples of an over-under bridge along CA-70. 38:00 - The Rock Creek Trestle. Similar to Clio and Chandler Road, the Rock Creek Trestle connects the slopes of the deep Canyon. 39:56 - The Pulga Bridges. So who can resist additional attractions not technically in Plumas County? The Pulga Bridges are another example of over-under bridges. This time, the terrain dictates the roadway crosses over the railroad with the Feather River below. 42:06 - The North Fork Bridge. The most secluded attraction is The North Fork Bridge. The largest reinforced cement railroad bridge in the United States is found deep within the Canyon. This bridge diverges from the original FRR through a long tunnel into James and Oroville, CA.
