We discovered 'white noise' machines earlier this year when our peace and tranquility came to an abrupt end when the ancient orchard we overlooked turned into a building site with banging, hammering, generators pounding away and heavy plant running from dawn to dusk. Birdsong was gone and replaced by heavy plant, rumbling delivery lorries and skips along with the dreaded builders' radios. For 10 months we've been driven to distraction and sought solace in white noise machines such as this to help block it all out and save our sanity. I was impressed by this Lemouchet white noise machine right from its very first use. It's a very well made unit with excellent build quality, smooth curves, feels solid and substantial and sits well on my desk and bedside table. It's a good squat shape: 155mm diameter with a 120mm footprint and, pleasingly, a non-slip base. The shape is especially good for use at night when reaching out sleepily - it's not going to be accidentally knocked off a table as the more vertical machines are. It can be either mains powered with a UK plug adapter supplied or, for true portability, it also has its own internal rechargeable battery - not found on any other model I've used. Another unique feature is the headphone socket so you can truly immerse yourself in its natural sounds, the quality of which is very good aided by the circular speaker giving a pleasing spatial effect whereas all other white noise machines I've used have just a small, single, square speaker providing 'small speaker' sound - unlike this Lemouchet model. Audio can also be set to play for 30, 60, 90 minutes or continuously until switched off - and settings are retained when it is switched on again. If desired, each sound can play for 2 minutes then switch to the next for 30 minutes followed by switch-off. The controls are simple and intuitive - ie a central power on/off button, volume up/down to each side, an audio selection button to the front and as sounds are selected, they illuminate gently. The sounds are varied and include: Fan Bubbles Brook Campfire Rainforest Birds Windchime Seagull and sea Ocean Rain Thunder Wind Typhoon Brown noise White noise With the exception of the rainforest which is a little muffled, all of the sounds are very good quality with the birdsong being especially bright and the best I've heard on such a machine and there are no obvious loops on any of the sounds. With 6 audio levels ranging from very quiet to 82dB (measured unscientifically on 'Ocean' at 6" away from the speaker on maximum volume) this masks most outside noise ie conversations, rumbling lorries, builders banging and hammering, rumbling lorries and nuisance barking dogs preventing unwanted distractions and aiding relaxation for sleeping or concentration for working. What it can't block, however, is the loud and pounding thump-thump-thump of a stereo bass or a chainsaw - but no white noise machine can boast this ability. Very quickly this has become a favourite machine for its quality build, shape, unique circular speaker and range of sounds. It is the most expensive model I have used at £65.99 (Oct 2017) but I am happy to pay the higher price for the superior product. It's worth it for stress-reduction during the day and improved sleep so I consider it a worthwhile investment and would happily buy it again.
