Hügelkultur, or "mound culture," is a technique of converting mounds of decaying wood and other compostable biomass into a raised bed. As the biomass decays, it releases nutrients and acts as a water storage battery, reducing irrigation needs. Modern Hugelkultur adaptations recommend filling raised beds with wood chips, branches and logs to have a similar effect, but is this actually a good idea?
