British Rail: The Beeching Cuts | Costly Mistake or Necessary Sacrifice? | History in the Dark

One of the more infamous, and debated, decisions from British Railways in the 1960's was to shut down many, many different lines that once connected the whole of the United Kingdom. Defenders will say it was needed to save the railway. Critics will say it was a wasteful, useless attempt to fix unrelated problems to railway operation. Either way, the decision is directly linked to two infamous reports penned by Dr. Richard Beeching, and the axe that followed. The plan was outlined in two reports: The Reshaping of British Railways (1963) and The Development of the Major Railway Trunk Routes (1965), written by Richard Beeching and published by the British Railways Board. The first report identified 2,363 stations and 5,000 miles (8,000 km) of railway line for closure, amounting to 55% of stations, 30% of route miles, and 67,700 British Rail positions, with an objective of stemming the large losses being incurred during a period of increasing competition from road transport and reducing the rail subsidies necessary to keep the network running. The second report identified a small number of major routes for significant investment. The 1963 report also recommended some less well-publicized changes, including a switch to the now-standard practice of containerization for rail freight, and the replacement of some services with integrated bus services linked to the remaining railheads." 🚂 Further reading 🚂 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beechin... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ernest_... 🟢Join this channel to get access to perks:    / @historyinthedark   🟢Patreon -   / darknessthecurse   🟣Discord -   / discord   🔵Facebook -   / history-in-the-dark-109003305113711   🟢Donations - https://streamlabs.com/edgerabbit/tip 🔴Reddit -   / historyinthedark   🔴Tiktok -   / historyinthedark   🟣Instagram -   / historyinthedark   🔵Twitter -   / darkthecurse   🟣Merch -    / @historyinthedark   🟣Twitch -   / edgerabbit   Other channels: 🟢Prehistory in the Dark:    / @prehistoryinthedark   🟣Gaming and Fanfic Readings:    / @darknessthecurse   🟣History Stuff:    / @historyinthedark   👔Merch: https://streamlabs.com/edgerabbit/merch --- I WRITE BOOKS!
