Margao Purument Fair 2024, May 19-26, South Goa

We were very excited to show you the first day, first show of our Margao Purument feri, which began today on Pentecost, or Holy Spirit feast, Sunday, May 19, 2024. But though it was bright when we left our house in Benaulim, by the time we reached Margao it was already quite dark due to thick rain clouds. It was just 4.30 when we reached but the light was like post-sunset. The skies were going to open anytime so we had to just hurry through all the stalls. So in this video we could not show much detail at all. You will just get a general idea of what is available at the feri, which is going on till Sunday 26th, May Unlike us, please do go prepared with umbrellas and raincoats. And please avoid going in four wheelers In Margao, the Purument feast spreads out along the roads between Margao’s Old Market and KTC Bus Stand. ‘purument’ is either a mangling of the Portuguese word provisão, meaning provisions, or preservação, meaning preservation, and this feast is all about stocking up on preserved provisions like dried fish, mango slices, home-made vinegar and kokum berries for the monsoon season, which begins in the second week of June in Goa. During the rains, fishing boats do not venture out to sea, because this is also the breeding season for many fish. Thus, plenty of dried and pickled fish is needed to survive the monsoon months. With people crowding the purument bazaars for provisions, clothes and household goods sellers also began bringing their wares. Therefore, purument is the time to replace old utensils and purchase new ones, and you will find everything a Goan kitchen needs, from clay combos to cast iron appe pans. And thus purument became, and still remains, the most important mid-year shopping outing for Goans, second only to the Diwali-Christmas seasons late in the year. In north Goa, the best purument shopping is done at Mapusa market on all Fridays of May, and in Panjim’s new municipal market. Margao’s purument in south Goa is the most famous of the purument bazaars of Goa, and is a magnet for shoppers and traders from every corner of Goa and from the villages and towns around Karwar, Hubli-Dharwad and Belgaum in Karnataka. This is the market that we will walk through in this video. Kadio-bodio stalls are at the entries to all the areas of the purument market. The pork bazaar in Old Market stretching down behind the Margao-Colva road is for preserved items. You will not get preserved provisions outside this area. The Panjim highway is lined with clothes stalls, with a good sprinkling of household goods stalls. The SGPDA ground is for all kinds of household goods with a good sprinkling of clothes stalls. The giant wheel and fun fair for kids is also on the SGPDA ground. The main Margao-Colva road has stoneware and pottery. For some of us, Margao’s purument market remains the occasion to get the perfectly salted dried fish. For others, it is the chance to get really good clothes at really low rates. For a few, it’s the time to spend those savings on that big piece of furniture. But for each and every one of us, Margao’s purument market is a whole lot of bargains, a whole lot of colour and above all a whole lot of fun. This year, we could not show much of the market because it began raining and we had to run. Many shoppers at the feri got stuck in the rain. We too had to wait for 10 minutes for the heavy rain to stop. We finished our tour on the Margao-Colva road We wish one and all a happy feast of the Holy Spirit Join this channel to get access to perks:    / @lesleyingoa   Music: Clara Mendes / Lejos de Ti, Coraje / courtesy of www.epidemicsound.com Caro Luna / Alma Perdida (Instrumental Version), Guajira a la Esperanza (Instrumental Version), Para Mi Amiga (Instrumental Version) / courtesy of www.epidemicsound.com Alcones Negros / Las Bailadoras (Instrumental Version) / courtesy of www.epidemicsound.com
