Iran - US sports team competes in Tehran

(21 Feb 1998) T/I: 10:02:42 An American sports team was on Friday night (20/02) given a huge ovation in Tehran at the end of a wrestling tournament in which they had participated, the first time US athletes have competed in Iran since the 1979 Islamic revolution. One of the US team members, Melvin Douglas, made a political gesture by holding up a portrait of Ayatollah Khameini, Iran's spiritual leader. But elsewhere in Tehran several hundred people staged an anti-American demonstration following Friday prayers. They were protesting against the threatened US military strike on neighbouring Iraq.
