I took that idea from the tympanist of the Amsterdam Concertgebouw Orchestra, who was giving a demonstration one morning at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention (PASIC). He just swivelled left and right so easily from the hips, with the mallets at the same height for each tympanum. It’s not where you take it from that counts, it’s where you take it to.
