The album explores the blissful beginning and usually inevitable decline of summer love. Most of us have, especially in our youth, experienced the bittersweetness of the classic “summer love.” In this case: that means a ‘summer lover’ you meet in a location that is not home to one or both of you – where one or both of you must leave at some point… returning to your faraway origins and where staying together somehow, is, for whatever reason- not an option. In summer love, there is a feeling that you’ve met someone with whom you can no longer imagine your life without. You go through so many feelings and while many of them are undoubtedly positive – there also comes waves of realization that this must end before either of you is ready for it to end. It creates a kind of desperate madness and emptiness even in the midst of the intense fullness of love and infatuation. There are often even psychological symptoms present that are similar to the first 5 stages of the Kubler-Ross grief cycle - denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. These particularly apply to the summer love we experience when we’re underage and our choices are still largely constrained by the will of our parents and the circumstances of their lives. In the denial, there is the lie you tell yourself that, ‘maybe we can make it work over a long distance or maybe somehow we can move to each other.’ In anger, there is the intense rage over the unfairness of your situation. “Why don’t we have control over our own destiny?!” In bargaining, there is an attempt to make a deal or some compromise with someone who might be able to keep this love together. “If I could sell all of my things or borrow money from […], I could afford to buy a ticket or an apartment and we could run away together.” In depression there is of course the realization of the futility of your efforts and the sense that this really might end. “I feel like I can’t breathe. I’m devastated. How am I going to live without you?” Finally, there is acceptance of the situation and perhaps some sense of hope to accompany it. “You have to leave and I know that. I accept it. But maybe someday, if it’s meant to be- we’ll find each other again.”" - Flora Cash, 2016 Written, produced and performed: Cole Randall, Shpresa Lleshaj
