Pain of Salvation - Idioglossia Drum Playthrough by Leo Margarit

Idioglossia has been released on the album The Perfect Element 20 years ago this year (2020)... Time flies... You will most certainly notice that I’m not playing the intro riff as on the original version. Obviously I follow the same time signature (which I hear that way: 7,5,7,8,7,5,3,7,7,3) but I see that intro as an opportunity to improvise a little bit, so chances are that if you catch us live playing that song (on rare occasions) I might play that differently every time... A little explanation about the section at 2:03, the signature is a 5/8 and goes like this: [2 groups of 3 16th notes + 2 16th triplets]X2 [2 16th quadruplets (4 against 3) + 4 32nd notes]X2. Sorry for the math formula but it makes me feel smart! The section at 7:18 is also interesting because it overlaps the 4/4 post intro drum pattern onto the 7/4 part that everybody else is playing. It becomes particularly challenging live when I also sing the actual 7/4 harmony on top of the playing... A little bit of production notes. I used the original tracks from the band’s session, made a click track out of it and played on top of it. The original recording was made without click but I have to say that I’m really impressed by the stability of the band and particularly Johan Langell. The tempo fluctuation never exceeds 1 bpm over the course of several bars, so hat down! Then I mixed the whole thing with the drums outrageously loud (as it always should be! 😁). I didn’t use any samples so what you hear is the real sound of my drums. I didn’t have access to my usual cameras so I went back to old school filming with my phone... So I did 5 takes from different angles and used the best takes. Have fun and feel free to ask any question in the comment section!
