GSV2020 Tutorial: Analyzing Multi-Variable Earth Observation Data Cubes (Marius Appel)
This tutorial provides an introduction to Earth Observation data cubes as implemented in the software library and R package gdalcubes. The on-demand creation of data cubes and the application of (user-defined) data cube operations are discussed. Afterwards, the tutorial focusses on how data cubes can be used to jointly analyze data from different satellite-based Earth Observation missions. The creation and analysis of such multi-variable data cubes is demonstrated in two practical examples, where combined image time series of vegetation, precipitation, and soil moisture data are created and analyzed. The tutorial closes with a discussion of limitations, further applications, technological challenges, and ongoing developments.
