Closed skin wounds mean the skin is still intact, whereas open skin wounds mean the skin is no longer intact and has been broken/cut. Closed skin wounds include the following: contusion, hematoma, blister, frostbite. In some cases, burns (1st degree) and pressure injuries (stage 1) are also considered closed wounds, but become open wounds in later phases. Open skin wounds include the following: abrasion, laceration, incision, skin tears, puncture wounds, penetrating wounds, avulsion, burns, pressure injuries, and venous/arterial ulcers.
