THE CARTOON ART OF MIKE DEODATO, JR. -- Volume 1 About this project HI THERE! My name is Mike Deodato, Jr.   You probably know my work.  I'm a Brazilian artist who got his start in the American comic-book industry in 1990 and have been a Marvel artist for the past decade.   I've drawn nearly every Marvel character you can think of, over the course of my books:  THE AVENGERS, NEW AVENGERS, DARK AVENGERS, SECRET AVENGERS (I sense a pattern there), X-MEN, WOLVERINE, THUNDERBOLTS, THE PUNISHER, THE HULK, SPIDER-MAN, ELEKTRA, WITCHES,  THOR, and many other Marvel titles.  Before that, I worked on WONDER WOMAN, BATMAN, LADY DEATH, GLORY, STAR WARS, LOST IN SPACE, QUANTUM LEAP, MAC BOLAN: THE EXECUTIONER, BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, and many other titles that my fingers are getting too tired to type. So you already know my painted style, my Image-era super-hero  style, my super-tight pencils style, my current ultra-realistic style, and so on.  What you probably don't know is that I'm also a cartoonist, and I love doing cartoons in a style a little bit reminiscent of Calvin and Hobbes, but with my own flavor to it, all about my work, my wife, and my family.   I love my wife and family, so this book is a real joy to create. I recently featured a couple of these on Twitter, but they've never been published anywhere -- until now. THE CARTOON ART OF MIKE DEODATO, JR. -- VOLUME 1 is the first (obviously!) of what I hope will be a series of books featuring my cartoon illustrations in different fun styles and on many different subjects. I'm imagining a wide format, something like 11" x 8.5", a slim saddle-stitched book, with full-color cardstock covers and line art interiors. and nice paper.  Heck, I even got special permission from Marvel to do this book for you. As you know, I have never before personally produced any kind of Convention portfolios or sketchbooks or artbooks during my 20+ years in the comics field.  So this is pretty special to me -- and I hope it will be special to you, as well.  Yes, I'll have these available at Conventions next year -- if you help to get this funded -- but this Kickstarter campaign will also place this book into your hands months before my next Convention appearance in the USA.  NEW TO KICKSTARTER? Wondering how the heck this works?  Well, over at the top right corner of this page is the GOAL. That's how much I will need to create and print the books -- to take to Conventions, sell some online and elsewhere, and to fulfill the rewards offered here.   If the goal is reached, printing will begin pretty quickly.  However:   If the goal is not reached before the end of the 30 days, though, then you will not be charged anything. You only pay if my project reaches its goal by the deadline! YOU WANT SWAG!I understand how good-hearted my fans are.  Some of you even travel halfway around the world to meet me when I do Conventions in the USA or Canada or Europe.  But I don't want to take advantage of that.   I wouldn't expect you to give away your hard-earned cash for the fun of it.  (Or maybe I do...because this book is a LOT of fun!)     Along the right side, you will see categories, with dollar amounts. By pledging that amount (or more!), you will receive the rewards listed in their respective boxes. Here are some examples of rewards: If you become part of this Kickstarter project , you have choices of loads of lovely rewards, many of which are available nowhere else:   Signed books, some lithographs, some remarked sketch editions, even big 11" x 17" custom commission sketches.  That's a biggie, because it's especially rare to be able to get new original art from me, except for cover art that I still draw on paper. I don't do many Conventions, and I'm limited by how many I can draw over a Con weekend.  I draw all my interiors digitally these days (on a Wacom Cintiq!), so you can't find any new originals.  So going for the gold is getting a custom commission as one of the key rewards. If you're a store, you can get a sizable stack of autographed copies at a great price, since I don't think this will be available through normal wholesale distribution. And the pinnacle prize (assuming you can put up with me) is the store or convention appearance, where I come to your event, draw and talk and hang out with you and the fans!
