Peter Dutton hits back at criticism of Coalition’s nuclear policy

Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has hit back at the Albanese government’s criticism of the Coalition’s nuclear plans following claims that they could deliver less than four per cent of Australia’s energy mix in 2050. Analysis by the Smart Energy Council revealed the estimated cost of building the seven nuclear reactors proposed by the Coalition could be up to $600 billion and deliver less than four per cent of Australia’s energy mix in 2050. Mr Dutton when asked during an interview with Sky News Australia rejected the estimate from the Smart Energy Council. “No and there’s more that we’ll have to say in relation to cost and the way in which we can utilise the existing distribution network by ramping up the energy that we’re producing out of our seven coal-fired power stations with the latest generation nuclear technology,” Mr Dutton told Sky News Australia. “And that’s a sensible way to do it because part of the government’s policy is to roll out 28,000 kilometres of new poles and wires, which frankly will never happen, and the government’s living this lie at the moment and unfortunately, we’re seeing a three-fold increase in manufacturing closures.”
