Climbing the legendary Puy de Dôme on a road bike!

You don't get the chance to climb the Puy de Dôme, scene of the famous 'duel' between Jacques Anquetil and Raymond Poulidor in the 1964 Tour de France, very often anymore. Once a stalwart of the Tour, a tourist train means that the road up this dormant volcano has been closed to cyclists for a few years now. But once a year, there's the chance to enter a ballot and experience the stinging gradient and the reward of fantastic views from the top. That's exactly what I did this year during a very enjoyable weekend in the Auvergne, based in the vibrant university town of Clermont-Ferrand. There are generally only around 300 places per year. If you are travelling from abroad, you are generally allowed to pay the 12 Euro entry fee on the day once you have registered and secured a number.
