Saudi writer wins International Prize for Arabic Fiction

(26 Apr 2017) LEADIN A Saudi writer has scooped the region's top literary prize. Mohammed Hasan Alwan has become the tenth winner of the annual International Prize for Arabic Fiction. STORYLINE: The winner of this year's International Prize for Arabic Fiction is about to be revealed and the short-listed novelists are on tenterhooks. Chair of the judges Sahar Khalifeh is about to make one of their dreams come true. She makes the announcement: "The winning novel is: 1, 2, 3: A Small Death". Saudi author Mohammed Hasan Alwan makes his way onto the stage. His book chronicles the trials and tribulations of a man on a journey of self-revelation through Andalusia in the 12th century during a turbulent period of history. He says winning the region's top literary prize is "overwhelming". The award is run with the support of the Booker Prize Foundation and funded by Abu Dhabi's Tourism and Culture Authority. Alwan is the third Saudi to win, beating 180 other novels from 19 countries. Khalifeh says the panel chose it because it is "distinctive" and "different" to other books on the market. "I hope that readers will love it like we loved it," she says. Alwan wins 50,000 US dollars as part of his prize. The five short-listed finalists will not go home empty handed either - they have clinched 10,000 US dollars each. But Khalifeh says this is not a contest about the cash. "It is more a literary win rather than a monetary one because there are prizes in the Arab world where the amount of money is way more than this one," she says. "So the importance of this prize is that it is very serious in terms of the choice of judges, from the administration, even the media that covers this and the organisation of this. It is elevated to the level of other major literary prizes." 'A Small Death' will be translated into English as part of his prize. It's a development that Alwan hopes will bring a wider audience for his work. "I think it is a valuable chance to reach different readers that I probably would have never reached before without this prize," he says. "Us, as writers without a reader is like screaming into space, no one can hear you." Alwan was born in Saudi Arabia's capital of Riyadh in 1979 and lives in Toronto, Canada. He has published five novels. The International Prize for Arabic Fiction is in its tenth year.
