We all know what plagiarism is. People plagiarize when they copy someone’s work and try to pass it off as their own. When it comes to manuscript drafting, plagiarism most commonly occurs in the literature review section. So how can plagiarism be avoided? Well, it’s rather straightforward. Just remember this thumb rule: “Don’t write when you read and don’t read when you write.” Let me explain. So basically, when you are conducting literature review, you should make it a point to understand what other researchers have studied so far, without copying their words, phrases, or sentences. In other words, if you conduct an honest literature survey, try to understand the overall context of the undertaken studies, and then communicate the same to your target audience in your own words after citing the published works, then you are not plagiarizing. Whereas mentioning previous works in your own style and language is considered legitimate, doing the same by copying and pasting from published or unpublished articles is tantamount to plagiarism. Remember—plagiarism is unethical and it is an infringement on someone else’s intellectual property rights. Let’s not plagiarize. Let’s be original. Let’s develop profound respect for originality and novelty.
