Iron Gwazi at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay is a hybrid rollercoaster created by Rocky Mountain Construction. Was Gwazi, a wooden dueling rollercoaster , which premiered on June 18, 1999, earned acclaim from both critics and the public. However, maintenance challenges led to the closure of the Tiger side in 2012 and the remaining side in 2015. After years of dormancy, Busch Gardens explored various replacement options before deciding to refurbish the wooden structure, beginning site preparation in late 2018. In 2019, the park announced Iron Gwazi as the replacement—a steel-tracked roller coaster—contracting Rocky Mountain Construction (RMC) for the retrofit. Originally set to open in 2020, delays happened due to the COVID-19 pandemic and other issues ensued. Iron Gwazi welcomed passholders on February 13, 2022, and the public on March 11. Marketed as North America's tallest, steepest, and fastest hybrid roller coaster, it stands at 206 feet (63 m) tall, reaches speeds of 76 mph (122 km/h), and extends the track length by 567 feet (173 m) compared to its predecessor.
