Stress Stress can be defined as the body’s reaction to feeling threatened or under pressure. And emotional factors such as stress, anxiety, or depression can affect a person’s appetite. Stress is something that can cause a change in ones eating habits. For example on the one hand stress can lead to overeating which may lead to obesity but on the other hand some people may lose their appetite due to stress and restrict their food intake. One study showed that roughly 40% of people increase their calorie intake when stressed and 40% of people decrease their calorie intake when stressed and 20% of people do not change their eating behaviours. 2. Common cold The common cold is a viral infection that may decrease a person’s appetite. When a person has a cold the body works hard to fight the infection and this can cause fatigue or a lack of energy. As a result this can make someone feel less hungry and they may just not have the energy to prepare or eat food. With a common cold some symptoms may include a sore throat, a cough, runny nose, or congestion. These symptoms can make eating uncomfortable, affect your sense of taste and smell. And having a sore throat may limit someone’s ability to swallow food and they may not want to eat because of the pain. Due to this they may feel less interested in food than they normally would. 3. Nutrition Deficiency To function properly our body needs a balance of nutrients. Deficiencies in certain nutrients can affect appetite. For example a deficiency in these nutrients can cause a lack of appetite. Magnesium Vitamin B12 Vitamin B1 Zinc Iron deficiency is also associated with a decreased appetite. A lack of iron for instance can lead to anaemia which can cause fatigue and a loss of appetite. And that is what one study showed.
