CURA Award 2020: Kim Hinkson

The New York State KinCare Coalition marked September 2020 as Kinship Care Month with an online event and presented its 6th annual CURA Awards to outstanding caregivers, organizations, professionals, and champions around the state. “New York State marks September as ‘Kinship Care Month’ to celebrate the treasured natural resource of kinship caregivers statewide,” said Rae Glaser, Co-Director of the NYS Kinship Navigator, an information, referral, and advocacy program for kinship caregivers in New York State. “Kinship Care refers to a non-parent relative - grandparents, aunts/uncles, adult siblings - or close family friend who takes on the responsibility of raising a child when the parent is unable to do so. In New York, some 195,000 children are living with relatives or family friends who are their primary caregivers.” CURA Awards, from the Latin “to care,” were presented to: • Outstanding Professional: Carolyn Fluckinger, Director, Family Service Society of Yonkers’ Kinship Support Program; • Outstanding Organization: Kinship Families of the North Country, Child Care Coordinating Council of the North Country; • Kinship Champion: Greg Olsen, Acting Director, NYS Office for the Aging; • Outstanding Kinship Caregiver: Sharon Johnson, Yonkers; and • Outstanding Kinship Caregiver: Kim Hinkson, Staten Island.
